Activity Director

Activity Directors work with individuals receiving long-term care. They are trained in geriatrics, therapeutic interventions and diversion activities to provide the Activity Professional with a strong base of knowledge, as well as the necessary skills and techniques to provide therapeutic activity services to clients and residents in a long-term care setting.

The Fundamental & Administrative Skills for Activity Professionals, Part I

Course Purpose

The course purpose is to understand the role of the activity professional in long-term health care facilities. Also, to provide an overview of the history, regulations, diagnostics groups, assessment processes, activity programming, communications, advocacy, ethics, service delivery, and volunteer management. This course, when combined with the fieldwork practicum, meets the state requirements to be qualified as an activity director in Texas.

  • Standards of practice and activity care planning
  • Methods of service delivery of the activity profession

Brief Overview

This Fundamental and Administrative Skills for Activity Professionals Part I course is 16 weeks long with instructor Dorothea Brewer. Each course is approved by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP) and Consortium of Therapeutic Recreation/Activities Certification (CTRAC-Texas certifying body); as well as meeting the requirements set by the State and Federal guidelines in all 50 States.

The course has been designed so that the student will focus directly on the classroom course work for the first 9 weeks. Once student completes the classroom part of the course they will continue with their 96 Hours Fieldwork Experience beginning week 10 through week 16. Students will submit their assignments every other week (this schedule will allow the student time management while balancing their work, family and class). Each student will have non-mandatory accessibility to the instructor through four individual phone chats. All students are offered optional live chats and classroom forum. This will allow students the opportunity to interact with other fellow classmates.

Expected Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will have acquired the knowledge of:

  • Understanding Activity Service as a profession and role as a professional
  • Breakdown of the long-term care continuum, while developing understanding of the goals and populations by all services in the long-term care continuum
  • Understanding the evaluation and implementation of services regarding needs of clients
  • Understanding human, legal, and organizational needs
  • Understanding and mastering of accountability and responsibility
  • Evaluation and mastering of listening skills and effective communication
  • Teamwork and relationships
  • Using problem-solving and conflict resolution with supervisors, staff, and families
  • Using of assertiveness in negotiation and argumentation
  • Understanding the concepts of professionalism and ethics
  • Discussing validity and reliability as an activity professional
  • Identifying the activity professions standard of practice, colleagues, ethics, and professional associations
  • Designing a plan for certification through NCCAP and CTRAC
  • Knowing the importance of keeping current with trends, research, resources, and continuing education within our field
  • Determining areas within the activity profession and patient care that require advocacy
  • Learning the breakdown of adult development
  • Learning the influence of race, gender, class, and culture on adult development
  • Understanding of the effects of life events regarding time, order, and history
  • Determining long life and life span factors in adult development
  • Understanding universal human needs
  • Identifying spirituality and organized belief systems of residents
  • Understanding of the death and dying process
  • Determining personal motives, goals, and limits as an activity professional
  • Identifying ethical strategies to maintain positive relationships with clients
  • Determining effective communication with various types of clients
  • Identifying holistic approaches to care giving
  • Identifying important data to collect for care planning, assessment, and goals
  • Determining the process of recording client progress
  • Learning how to effectively work within the interdisciplinary care planning team and team goal setting
  • Understanding of care conferences and protocols
  • Knowledge of leadership and leading activity groups
  • Understanding and managing group behavior in activities
  • To understand and demonstrate how to develop activity plans for all levels of residents/or clients using all the activity domains.
  • Developing a philosophy for care and including the service delivery
  • Understanding elements of the activity service design and development
  • Learning the Individual Comprehensive Assessment
  • Putting together the service design with program implementation with the use of volunteers to make a successful program

Fieldwork Supervisor Information

Note: Students may complete their practicum/fieldwork under one of the following professionals below:

  • CTRAC (Consortium of Therapeutic Recreation/Activities Certification)
  • NCCAP (National Certification Council of Activities Professional)
  • NCTRC (National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification)
  • Qualified Activity Director with at least 5 years or more experience or
  • The Administrator of the Facility
