The public depends on police officers and law enforcement professionals for protection of life and property. The opportunity to serve and protect the public attracts many to this challenging job, which requires honesty, sound judgment, integrity, and a sense of responsibility.
The AAS degree in Law Enforcement and Police Administration prepares individuals for career services in law enforcement and related occupations. The AA degree is available to students planning to major in Criminal Justice and transfer to a four-year university.
The Certification in Basic Law Enforcement is a series of courses designed to prepare students for a career in Texas law enforcement and to take the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education Exam (TCLEOSE) – the state licensing exam.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov, career opportunities in most local police departments will be excellent for qualified individuals, while competition is expected for jobs in State and Federal agencies. Statistics also declared the national median annual earnings for police and sheriff’s patrol officers were $47,460 in May 2006. Salary amount often varies depending on the place of employment, job title and level of experience.
Once graduates become certified by passing the TCLEOSE, they are eligible for employment in any law enforcement agency in the state of Texas.

- Monday - Friday from 7:30 am - 5:30 pm and an occasional Saturday.
- Night Academy - Two semesters. Begins in August and ends in May or begins in January and ends in December.

(Texas Peace Officers Program).................................38 credit hours
- High School Diploma or GED with 12 college hours (prior to enrollment). Provide proof of graduation and transcript.
- Score at least 35 on reading and vocabulary assessment test or fall within an exception.
- Be fingerprinted and supply information for a criminal history and driver’s license check.
- Must have no family violence convictions.
- Students below 21 years of age must have a minimum of 38 college hours; or 2 years active military service with an honorable discharge; or be 21 years of age upon graduation from the Academy.
- A passing grade of 70 must be attained in each subject while in the academy. Grades below 70 are grounds for dismissal.
- Absences reaching 40 hours or more are grounds for dismissal. Other requirements apply. Tuition and fees are due at the time of academy registration.
- Tuition covers instruction. Special fees cover criminal history check, ammunition, range fees, shoulder patches and cost of the driving course.
