Drafting is required for the design, development, manufacturing and construction of most products. Drafters translate data and sketches from engineers, architects and scientists into detailed drawings that are used in manufacturing and construction. The ACC Drafting Technology Program boasts extensive hands on training, as well as courses covering the principles of engineering, civil, mechanical and architectural graphics. This well-rounded education provides you with many opportunities in specialized areas and allows you to obtain the necessary qualifications for employment as entry-level drafters.
Due to the technical nature of the program, you’ll have greater success if you are inquisitive, technically oriented and have good computer skills.
Drafting technicians are a critical part of design teams. You’ll work with engineers, designers, scientists, supervisors, and skilled craftsmen. A few areas of opportunity for drafters include electronics, machinery, automotive design, instrumentation, marine structures, shipbuilding, process equipment, fabrication, aeronautical and spacecraft design, commercial and residential architecture, and civil engineering. Drafting technicians and designers are in great demand. ACC graduates have close to a 100% job placement rate. Many students find employment prior to graduation. The U.S. National average for an entry level drafter is $39,154 according to Salary.com.
