Honors Program Requirements

Honors classes, as well as eligibility to develop an honors project in a regular class, are reserved for students who have demonstrated a high level of achievement at ACC or in high school. Students must meet at least one of the following criteria:

• A GPA of at least 3.0 with at least 12 hours
• An ACT score of at least 26
• An SAT score of at least 1100
• Graduation in the top 20% of your high school class
• Approval by the class instructor

If you wish to develop an honors project in a non-honors class, approach your instructor within the first week of class. Together you will determine the appropriate project and enter into a contract stipulating what is expected of each of you.

In addition to the above requirements, the student agrees to the following:

1. Submit a completed contract by   [insert date]                              
2. Attend an orientation session outlining expectations for the project
3. Attend class regularly
4. Participate in class discussions
5. Submit an outline, abstract, prospectus, or bibliography for the project by   [insert date]
6. Complete and present the honors project by   [insert date]
7. Complete all course requirements and earn at least a B in the course.
8. Present and defend the quality of his or her work to the instructor upon completion. The student also agrees to allow Alvin Community College to publicize the resulting work, giving full credit to the student.

If at any time the student feels unable to complete the honors assignment, he or she may revert to non-honors status without penalty. The instructor also has the right to terminate this contract if he or she believes that the student is failing to live up to its requirements. Honors designation will only be given if the instructor and/or the Honors Committee deems it worthy.

In exchange for satisfactory completion of the above requirements, the student will receive honors designation on their transcript and receive all of the recognition and honors given to Alvin Community College honors students.  In addition, the student is eligible for scholarship awards from the Honors Program
