Purpose:    The one-year program prepares the student to meet the educational requirements for the certification by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

Program Requirements: In addition to the general requirements for admission to the college, entry into Mental Health Program requires a personal interview with the Mental Heath Department Chairman.

Degree:     
Associate in Applied Science

Length:      Four-Semester (two-year) Program

Purpose:     The Associate in Applied Science Degree curriculum in Mental Health provides theory, skills, and knowledge used in the field of mental health—mental retardation and alcohol and drug abuse.  The program prepares the graduate to obtain employment in a variety of human service and mental health settings under the supervision of a professional or rehabilitation training, direct care to clients, probation, corrections, treatment for alcohol and drug dependency and psychiatric care.

                   Students who complete the required DSHS approved courses and the required work of volunteer time will be eligible to take the licensure examinations for the Texas Department of State Health Services.

This course is an introduction to the basic concepts of socila welfare, insurance, service programs and practices. Course includes historical development, clinical issues in the helping professions - including persons with mental illness and drug addiction treatment. Course replaces PMHS 1301. Psychological, physiological, and sociological effects of mood altering substances and behaviors and their implications for the addiction process are discussed. Emphasis is placed on pharmacological effects of tolerance, dependency/withdrawal, cross addiction, and drug interaction. This course in an introduction to the family as a dynamic system, focusing on the effects of addiction pertaining to family roles, rules, and behavior patterns. Discuss the impact of mood altering substances and behaviors and therapeutic alternatives as they relate to the family from a multicultural and trans-generational perspective. Examines procedures by which a counselor/program identifies and evaluates an individual’s strengths, weaknesses, problems, and needs, which will be used in the development of a treatment plan. Prepares the student to appropriately explain assessment results and individual rights to clients. An introduction to major theories of various treatment modalities including Reality Therapy, Psycho-dynamic, Grief Therapy, Client Centered Therapy, Rational Emotive Therapy, cognitive-behavioral approaches such as life skills training, behavior modification, and the introduction to experiential therapies as they relate to detoxification, residential, outpatient, and extended treatment. This course is an introduction to the patterns and dynamics of group interactions across the life span. Focus includes group therapy, structure, types, stages, development, leadership, therapeutic factors, and the impact of groups on the individual, group growth, and behavior. Effective group facilitation skills and techniques used to address special population issues and needs are covered. Effective case management and record keeping are addressed. This course is an in depth study of the theories and principles of behavioral science and skill development in the methods of modifying and controlling behavior. We will examine clinical and personal settings in counseling. The course will emphasize techniques for managing self-behavior. Topics include stimulus controls, shaping, relaxation training, reinforcement scheduling and taken economics. (3 lecture hours per week).
