First, you will perform your prepared selections for faculty members who may then ask you to vocalize or play some scales. Next, you may be asked to sight-read an excerpt. We encourage you to prepare at least four minutes worth of music for your audition. You might wish to select etudes or solo excerpts from works you have played for lessons, Region Try-Outs, Solo & Ensemble, or other performances. You are not required to use an accompanist. Suggestions are as follows:
Vocalists – sing two contrasting selections.
Brass, Woodwinds, Piano, and Guitar – perform two contrasting selections: one fast and technical, the other slow and lyrical.
Percussion – perform one selection on two of the following: snare, mallets, or timpani.
When are Scholarship Auditions?
Although auditions may be scheduled throughout the year, the Music Department sets aside at least one day each year for the majority of scholarship auditions. It is recommended that applicants make every effort to attend these scheduled audition dates. If this is not possible, special auditions can be heard by making an appointment with the Music Office.
