General Information - Music Scholarships

Music Scholarships at Alvin Community College are available to all qualified students, whether they are music majors or not. Although encouraged, it is not required that an individual take private lessons if they are not a music major. Award amounts are generous. Non majors may receive awards for performing in ensembles.

What are the criteria for scholarship awards?

ACC music scholarships are based on merit and the needs of the various ACC performing ensembles. Awards are given for participation in Concert Choir, Chamber Singers Concert Band, or Jazz Band.

What if I am a music major?

Music majors must agree to the following requirements in order to receive awards: 1. File an Associate Degree plan in music; 2. Register as a full-time student (minimum of 12 semester hours); 3. Perform in at least one ensemble and audition for another; 4. Maintain a semester grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 and a cumulative GPA of 2.0. 5. Attend all department recitals and concerts; 6. Participate in all fundraising activities.

Do I have to be a music major to receive a music scholarship?

No. You simply have to agree to the requirements of the scholarship which generally include the following: 1. Participate in the assigned ensemble(s); 2. Register as a full-time student (minimum of 12 semester hours); 3. Maintain a semester grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 and a cumulative GPA of 2.0. 4. Attend all department recitals and concerts; 5. Participate in all fundraising activities.

What if I am considered Out-of-District?

An award of at least $1000 a year waives the out-of-district fee.

May I receive a scholarship for more than one semester?

Yes. Generally, students will continue to receive their scholarship providing they fulfill the scholarship requirements. Students may receive awards for a maximum of four regular semesters.

Are music scholarships available for students who begin in the Spring semester?

Although most awards are offered prior to the beginning of the academic year, students who enter ACC in the spring semester may audition for a scholarship. Awards will be given if funds are available.

What other types of financial aid are available at ACC?

Students are encouraged to complete financial aid forms that are available from the Financial Aid Office. This office will assist you with other types of financial assistance, some which are based on merit, others which are based on need.

If you are offered a music scholarship, please return the Reply Form by the specified deadline. If you miss the deadline, you run a risk of losing the award. If you need additional time to consider the offer, please contact the appropriate area coordinator prior to the deadline. If you accept the offer and then change your mind about attending ACC or accepting the award, it is important for you to let us know as soon as possible so that the award may be offered to another qualified applicant.
