In addition to the financial aid offered by Alvin Community College, the Department of Speech and Drama offers two series of scholarships for drama majors.
The Paul Lawson Scholarship Fund for drama students was established in 1977 after the young actor died in an automobile accident. Paul's friends, family, and co-workers could think of no greater tribute to him than to help other students continue in the field that he loved so much.
The scholarship covers tuition and fees and is renewable for up to two years. You must maintain an overall grade point average of 2.25 to retain the scholarship. Several Paul Lawson Scholarships are awarded every year.
To apply for the Paul Lawson Scholarship, you must audition and complete an application (pdf) or application (MS Word). The audition should consist of two contrasting pieces, the total not being more than three minutes in length. If you have a portfolio of design work, the audition would be the proper time to display it. To schedule an audition, contact the department chairman, Dr. C. Jay Burton at 281-756-3607 or Drama@alvincollege.edu.
The James Williams Scholarship Fund was established in 1980 after James died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. James loved the theatre, so it is fitting that the James Williams Scholarship be awarded to a second-year student who has demonstrated excellence in production.
The James Williams scholarship is awarded to an outstanding returning drama student who has, in the opinion of the awards committee, made a significant contribution to the department both on and off stage. Nominations and selection of recipients is done by committee. This scholarship is not awarded every year.
The James Williams Scholarship covers tuition and fees, plus a cash stipend. It is awarded for one semester and is renewable for one more semester. You must maintain a grade point average of 2.25 to renew the scholarship.
Both scholarships are perpetuated through donations and box office proceeds. To donate to either scholarship fund, drop your check by the box office or send it to:
