Emergency Medical Technology

Program Description

The basic Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) program is designed for persons in the emergency health care field, such as ambulance personnel, safety engineers, industrial nurses, rescue squad workers, child care personnel, policemen and firemen, as well as anyone who supervises or is responsible for the safety and well-being of a number of people.

The program includes class lectures, skills training and clinical training in hospital and ambulance settings. Alvin Community College's EMT program adheres to the curricula set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Texas Department of Health, American Heart Association and the National Basic Trauma Life Support Association.

Career Opportunities

EMTs and paramedics are employed in a number of industries including private ambulance firms, local governments, service providers, hospitals, industrial/occupational safety, fire department EMS agencies, disaster/special rescue teams, special event/entertainment medic, and police/tactical paramedic. The demand for EMTs and paramedics will continue to increase as the population grows - particularly older age groups that are the greatest users of emergency medical services.

The training levels for Emergency Medical Technicians are as follows: EMT Basic, EMT Intermediate, and EMT Paramedic.

EMT with Enhanced Skills Certificate............78 credit hours (2 years)

Emergency Medical Technology Certificate............40 credit hours (2 years)
