Learn how to implement Microsoft Word for home or office use with a course offered at Alvin Community College beginning on July 21. This course is for those who are just beginning to use Microsoft Word and also for those who are “self-taught” and need to enhance their skills. Students will learn to create, edit, format and print documents. Other tools and techniques include the use of tables and graphics in documents. Students will also learn to use find-and-replace, spell check, auto-text, and other features of this very powerful word processing software. The Alvin Community College Continuing Education Department will offer a one-day Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Course on July 21 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Nolan Ryan Center. Students will receive instruction in lifesaving skills of respiratory (choking) and cardiac emergencies. Automated external defibrillator (AED) training is included. The course meets the American Heart Association for Healthcare Provider requirements. The course costs $40 and a textbook is required. ACC Hosts Kids’ College at Pearland Center
Alvin Community College will host Busy Bodies Kids’ College at the ACC Pearland Center, 2319 N. Grand Blvd., July 21-24. Students entering kindergarten through sixth grade for the 2008-2009 school year are eligible to participate in numerous classes. In addition to having lots of fun, kids will have the opportunity to learn skills in creativity, computers, writing, directing, acting, athletics, and social interaction. Registration is held Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Nolan Ryan Center and ACC Pearland Center. Deadline to register for each session is four working days prior to the first day of the session. Registration must be done in person. Concealed Handgun Renewal in One Day
Alvin Community College will host a one-day concealed handgun renewal class on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This class meets state requirements to renew a Concealed Handgun License. Tuition fee includes photographs, notarizing of required documents, fingerprinting, target, ammunition, and certificate fee. The cost is $68. There is an additional state licensing fee. LEARN Courses for Adults with Disabilities Available
The Alvin Community College LEARN Project will offer a six-week course for adults with disabilities beginning on Aug. 12. Each six-week session is different and unique and participants can learn skills in money management, functional reading, food and nutrition, social interaction, vocational preparation and much more. Guest speakers and field trips are often included. The courses are designed primarily for individuals with some form of mental retardation. It is the mission of the ACC LEARN Project to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to learn skills that will allow them to become more independent in their daily lives. Classes will be held each Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $60 per session for in-district residents and $75 for out-of-district.
