ACC Issues Grant for Mascot Scholarship

ACC Issues Grant for Mascot Scholarship

For a dolphin the Alvin Community College mascot "Blue" stays busy visiting college events, community events, local schools and civic organizations.

One of the most visible faces at the college, Blue's profile has grown throughout ACC and beyond.

"He is a really great recruiting tool," said ACC Marketing Director Lynn Goswick. "Blue has become a very popular component on campus and we need to increase our efforts."

A $1,200 Innovative Initiative Grant was awarded by the ACC Foundation to the Love Ya Blue program, which will help fund a scholarship for a student who would be responsible for serving as the ACC mascot Blue. The dedicated student will help Blue meet his appearance demands in the community.

The Innovative Initiative Grants are designed to encourage, facilitate, recognize and reward innovative and creative approaches to fulfill the mission of Alvin Community College. The grants will be used for the 2014-15 academic year. The Foundation began issuing the grants in 2012.

ACC Student Recruiter Liz Sitta said Blue draws a great reaction from the many crowds that he interacts with whether they are students at local schools, ACC students or members of the community.

"He is in such high demand," she said. "He symbolizes the school and our community spirit."

Many students portray Blue when he is needed at an event or a recruiting trip. Having one student designated to serve as the mascot will provide consistency, Sitta said.

Blue's purpose at ACC is versatile because he serves not only as a symbol for the college, he also an entertainer at the events he attends including Open House, homecoming parades, Frontier Day and many more.

"The whole purpose is for the student to embody Blue and his personality," she said.

The college is now seeking applications for the scholarship for students who are outgoing, creative, physically capable of performing stunts and activities, disciplined, responsible and more.

Students must be at least a part-time student at ACC with a 2.0 GPA or better. They must also be available throughout the week and on Saturdays.
There will be tryouts for the Blue mascot scholarship on August 7.
