ACC to Host Curriculum Conference

Alvin Community College instructors are looking for new, innovative ways to improve the core curriculum courses during a conference on February 10.

The Across the Curriculum Conference is a one-day event will include presentations from instructors, administrators and others about developing new methods for the classroom.

“This is an event that will allow instructors around ACC as well as other local colleges to share their ideas and teaching techniques,” English instructor Keith Vyvial said. “It will help promote our dedication to professional development as well as bring more  awareness for Alvin community College.”

Presenters at the conference will include faculty, administrators, tutors, student mentors to share their best practices for research, student success and challenges.

Some of the topics covered may include dual enrollment, blended-online  programs, transition from developmental to college-level courses, technological literacy, collaborative learning and any topics regarding core curriculum concentration.

“ACC is proud to host this inaugural professional development event for our regional educators,” ACC Vice President of Instruction Dr. Cynthia Griffith said.

“Professor Vyvial and his fellow faculty members have worked hard to provide a platform for local educators to share their knowledge. We hope it will be the first of many such offerings in the future. The conference will also serve as an opportunity for our creative faculty to showcase the expertise and demonstrate how they enhance student learning thorough great classroom engagement strategies.”

Vyvial hopes the conference will create stronger, more effective practices in all programs.

“We all teach different subjects and at different schools, but we all share the same goal,” he said. “We all work to remain current and vital as instructors. We are always learning how to best reach and teach our students. This demonstrates our dedication to student success by allowing us to discover how each other works to help our students.”

Topics chosen for the presentations will be divided into 45 minute sessions which includes 10 to 15 minutes for question and answer.

The conference is free to attendees.

Educators can also earn three Continuing Professional Education credits for attendance. The Texas Education Agency recently approved ACC as a provider of CPE to Texas educators for certificate renewal purposes.
