ACC Regents Approve Tuition Waiver

The Alvin Community College Board of Regents approved waiving tuition and fees for Career and Technical Education courses at Alvin ISD campuses during their meeting on January 12.

Under the agreement, Alvin ISD will allow ACC to offer classes in the evenings at Shadow Creek High School.

“Even with waived tuition and fees for Career and Technical Education, the increased number of courses will generate contact hours that will offset the loss of tuition,” President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht.

The tuition and fees change will take effect in Fall 2017.

Regents approved a project to renovate restrooms on campus. The renovations are part of ACC’s Facilities Master Plan, approved by regents in 2016.

Renovations will cost approximately $86,000 for six restrooms in Building B. Those renovations will include replacement of sheetrock, ceilings, lights and partitions.

Regents approved grant applications for including a Building Construction Trades Training project and an HCA Hospital Skills Development Fund project for $100,000.

The $300,000 Building Construction Project, if awarded, the funds would go to training for welding and pipefitting students while also expanding the curriculum for other programs.

The $100,000 HCA grant, if awarded, would provide training for healthcare workers in the Pearland Medical Center area for CPR, surgical care, medication aid and more.

At the start of the meeting, Board Chair Mike Pyburn recognized two honors students, Freyja Coe and Julie Higuera, for their research projects that were accepted by the National Association of African American Studies. The two students will present their research at the organization’s national conference in February.

Pyburn also recognized interim Arts and Sciences Dean John Matula, second from left, and Respiratory Care Director Marby McKinney, who were both awarded the ACC John and Suzanne Roueche Excellence Award. They will be recognized at the League for Innovations Conference in March in San Francisco.

Albrecht reported to the board that: the college received a higher bond rating by Fitch Ratings firm, the ACC Foundation raised $52,000 at the 2016 gala, and many upcoming events.

Regents also:

-approved a resale trust property

-received the 2015-16 financial audit and will consider approval at February meeting

-heard a presentation for possible HVAC upgrades

-hiring of Lorrent Smith for director of Marketing

-approved action regarding a tenured faculty member’s employment

-approved monthly financial reports

-received reports on Developmental Education and course completion rates

The board will have its next meeting on February 23 at 6 p.m. in the Nolan Ryan Center.
