ACC President Forum

Alvin Community College students had a chance to speak with President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht during the annual Presidents Forum on February 21.

Students asked Albrecht about issues facing the college including: facilities upgrades, college programs, upgrading technology and firearms on campus . The event started 31 years ago to obtain input from students and create a dialogue.

“The president’s forum provides our students with an invaluable opportunity to speak directly with the college president to voice their concerns and become active members of campus community,” Student Activities coordinator Amanda Smithson said.

Students discussed possible upgrades to ACC facilities and asked Dr. Albrecht if there would be any progress. The college is pursuing upgrades to infrastructure and a new softball fieldhouse. The library recently had renovations which added new math classrooms and added spaces, she said.

“We wanted to create an open space that is more inviting,” she said.

The library upgrades were funded through a Hispanic Serving Institution grant to improve Science, Technology, Engineering and Math instruction.

Students also asked about a new law will go into effect this summer, allowing students to carry firearms on campus if they have a Concealed Handgun License. Albrecht said the rules and regulations for implementing the law will soon go to the board of regents. The law takes effect August 1.

“These rules outline where on campus you can have a firearm and designates the gun free zones,” she said.

Albrecht also fielded requests for improving technology for disabled students, adding recycling stations on campus as the upcoming request for proposals for a food service provider for the campus café.
