ACC Regents Approve Softball Fieldhouse

Alvin Community College regents approved a softball fieldhouse project during their meeting on February 23.

The $617,000 project with Aries Building Systems would build a fieldhouse adjacent to the softball field. The majority of the project costs includes tie-in to the Alvin city water and sewer lines which are required by ordinance.

The project is set to be complete by July 1.

In other action, regents also approved the 2015-16 financial audit by the Belt, Harris and Pechacek firm. Auditors issued an “unmodified” opinion regarding the college’s financial status, which means the college maintains sound fiscal policy.

The board received the audit during its January meeting.

Regents also heard a presentation from Vice President of Student Services Marilyn Dement regarding recent developments in her department.

Dement reported several statistics including a 12 percent increase in degrees and certificates awarded in 2015-16 school year compared to the previous year. She also reported there was a 40 percent increase in Pell Grant awards from 2015 to 2016.

Dement told regents that the Dual Credit program continues to grow among local high schools. With the addition of Shadow Creek High School this year, Dual Credit students increased 26 percent from the 2015 to 2016 school years.

The board received the rules and regulations developed by college staff to implement the Concealed Carry Law, which takes effect on August 1. The rules and regulations establish where guns are allowed on campus.

Chairman Mike Pyburn reported to the board that the college board recently went on a tour of the ACC Physical Plant facilities to review the conditions for possible, repair, renovation or replacement.

President Christal M. Albrecht reported to the board: the attendance of the Community College Day event on February 7 in Austin; the recent SkillsUSA competition held at the campus; a recent exhibit of ACC Dual Credit students artwork at the Contemporary Art Museum of Houston and other events.
