ACC Certifying Math Tutors

ACC Certifying Math Tutors

To help fuel student success in the critical Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields, Alvin Community College is currently using grant funds to improve tutoring services.

“We are working on multiple initiatives, such as revising Developmental Math and English Curriculum, building academic support and in-time interventions,” said Dr. Nadia Nazarenko, Dean of Academic Programs. “We are also providing professional development to faculty and staff regarding new methodologies.”

The college was recently awarded two grants that will help fund the initiatives.  A $249,000 annual Wagner-Peyser grant was awarded to ACC from the Texas Workforce Commission specifically to improve developmental Math education.

A STEM grant for $3.8 million over the next five years was awarded to ACC after the college received the Hispanic Serving Institute distinction from the U.S. Department of Education.

“With these grants, we will  be able to redevelop some of our curriculum; build the Math Success Center; and redevelop our tutoring and academic support services by creating Persist program and Summer bridge,” Nazarenko said.

Some students are required to take developmental courses based on their performance on the Texas Success Initiative test prior to enrolling in college.

In the Spring, ACC completed renovations in the library that included the Math Success Center. The college has also funded training to certify 30 tutors for the success center.

Several new staff members have also been hired through the STEM grant.

“We will be adding more National Tutoring certification, supplemental instruction and academic coaching and mentoring,” Nazarenko said. “Those who receive national certification and Train-the-Trainer certification will be able to provide continuous training and professional development for all our tutors and faculty.”

The grant will also assist ACC in meeting legislative requirements to shift developmental Math and English courses into a co-requisite model.
