ACC Regents Review Preliminary Budget Proposal

Alvin Community College regents reviewed the preliminary budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year during their meeting on June 22.

The proposed Maintenance and Operations budget is $31.15 million, which is a 6.8 percent increase from the 2016-17 fiscal year.

The Texas Legislature increased the amount of state appropriations by nine percent due to the increase in enrollment at ACC. Projections for property tax revenue are set to increase to 4.5 percent due to a projected boost in local property values though certified values are not due until July.

Projected tax rates will be calculated once property values are finalized. The budget is in preliminary stages and may be adjusted before approval.

Also during the meeting the ACC Upward Bound program was recognized for its five-year grant renewal from the U.S. Department of Education. Started in 2003, the Upward Bound program seeks to motivate low-income and/or potential first-generation college students and help them develop the skills they need to complete secondary education and succeed at the postsecondary educational institution of their choice. The ACC Upward Bound staff wrote the grant and received a perfect score for their application.

ACC graduate Sara Coe, of Friendswood, was also recognized by the board after her recent acceptance to Harvard Law School. Coe, 2013 a graduate of the ACC Honors program, will start classes in the fall.

In her board report, President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht reported that the college had a record number of Dual Degree graduates at the May Commencement ceremonies and the Music Department’s participation with a library program. She also announced upcoming events including the Independence Day concert, Summer Children’s Theatre Festival and more.
