ACC Announces 2017-18 Drama Season

ACC Announces 2017-18 Drama Season

A comedic mystery based on a legendary character, a Christmas caper and a classic Broadway musical fill the lineup  for the Alvin Community College Drama Department’s 2017-18 season.

The season will kick off with Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, which will run from October 7-14. A Christmas Cactus will run from December 2-9. The spring musical Godspell 2012 will be performed March 3-10.

The productions for the Summer Children’s Theatre Festival on June 25-28 and July 23-26, will be announced in the near future.

“We have, I think a very entertaining season,” Drama Chair Dr. Jay Burton said. “There is mystery, humor, and sentiment--something for everyone. We are looking to this season that brings three very distinct and entertaining stories to the Alvin community.”

Baskerville is a comedic play that infuses the spirt of the legendary Sherlock Holmes novels.

“The first show, Ken Ludwig's Baskerville combines Ludwig's rare sense of humor with one of Sherlock Holmes' most famous cases,” Burton said. “That the show is written and performed in the style of The 39 Steps only adds to the hilarity of the production.”

Performances on October 7 and 12-14 will be at 7:30 p.m. There will be a 2:30 p.m. performance on October 8.

The holiday production will be Christmas Cactus, the story of private investigator Cactus O’Riley who’s suffering from a case of holiday blues.

A Christmas Cactus is our just-a-little-offbeat Christmas offering,” Burton said. “The play revolves around Christmas time at the Cactus Detective Agency and has all the elements to create a light-hearted seasonal delight.

Performances on December 2 and 7-9 will be at 7:30 p.m. There will be a 2:30 p.m. performance on December 3. Auditions will be on October 10 at 7 p.m. in the Theatre.

Godspell 2012 is a musical based on Biblical parables set to the beat of modern music. The musical has been performed on Broadway and around the world.

Godspell  is the revival version of Stephen Schwartz's award-winning musical based on the Gospel of Matthew,” Burton said. “Regardless of your personal beliefs, the show's powerful message of love and community speaks to everyone.”

Performances on March 3 and 8-10 will be at 7:30 p.m. There will be a 2:30 p.m. performance on March 4. Auditions for the musical are December 12 at 7 p.m. in the ACC Theatre.

The two titles for the Summer Children’s Theatre Festival have not yet been announced. Performances for the first play will be at 10 a.m. on June 25-28 with a 7:30 p.m. performance on June 28. The second production for the summer will be July 23-26  with performances at 10 a.m. and a 7:30 p.m. performance on July 26. Auditions for the two plays will be on May 1-2.
