ACC Seeks Bond to Protect Students and Staff

For a student to adequately focus on their education, they have to have a safe and secure learning environment.

“Protecting students and staff is an important aspect of campus life at Alvin Community College,” President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht said. “As we enforce the recent campus carry law, it is essential to reinforce our safety and security systems.”

Alvin Community College is seeking $48.5 million as part of a bond issue on the Tuesday, November 7 ballot. The bond issue will fund upgrades for campus safety and security, an overhaul of infrastructure and improvements plus the construction and equipment for a new, career-focused Technical/Academic Building.

If approved by voters, approximately $1.5 million will be used to enhance protections for students and staff. The upgrades would allow for card access to facilities, additional lighting around campus and the installation of emergency phones.

The Board of Regents voted to place the bond issue on the ballot in August. The proposed projects were developed by a committee that was made entirely of ACC taxpayers.

“Protecting those on campus was the number one priority of the committee,” Albrecht said.

The card access feature would require students and staff to swipe a card at certain entrances to campus buildings.

Additional lighting would improve security by increasing visibility around campus, which has been shown to reduce criminal activity.

Installing emergency phones on campus allows students facing a possible threat to quickly alert the campus police. While many students and staff carry mobile phones, their use can be compromised by a lack of coverage or a depleted battery charge. Emergency phones, which would be permanently installed, are a dependable connection with law enforcement.

“A secure and safe campus is crucial for the academic success of our students,” Albrecht said. “Protecting them, our staff members and visitors will translate into a better learning environment.”

Early voting for the election will be October 23-November 3. The election is Tuesday, November 7. Visit www.alvincollegebond.com for more information.
