ACC Bond Proposal Includes New Technical/Academic Facility

As demand for highly-skilled workers in local industry continues to grow, Alvin Community College tailors its courses and programs to meet that need.

“One of our most important goal’s as a community college is to train workers to address the employment needs of our local industry,” President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht said.

Alvin Community College is seeking $48.5 million as part of a bond issue on the Tuesday, November 7 ballot. The bond issue would fund the construction and equipment for a new, career-focused Technical/Academic Building in addition to upgrades for campus safety and security and an overhaul of infrastructure.

Approximately $35 million of the bond would construct an 80,000 square-foot building that would provide classrooms and space for current technical programs such as Process Technology, Welding, Computer Information Systems and Truck Driving. New programs planned for development that could be based in the technical facility include cyber-security, geographic information systems (GIS), instrumentation and logistics/supply chain management.

“The new facility would include spaces to allow the college flexibility to modify and add to our programs based on business and industry demand,” Albrecht said. “The facility would be built for current and future technology. It would incorporate tools and equipment comparable to what students will use and experience in the workforce.”

Approximately 30,000 square feet of the new building would be used for academic courses such as History, English, Government and Math. Those courses are currently in the G Building, which is the oldest facility on campus. The bond includes funds to demolish G Building.

“G Building is more than 55 years old and was not constructed with today’s technology in mind,” Albrecht said. “This makes the facility costly to use and to maintain.”

Construction for the new facility is projected to take 18 to 24 months to complete.

Early voting for the election will be October 23-November 3. The election is Tuesday, November 7. Visit for more information.
