TWC Commissioner Presents Grant to ACC

Texas Workforce Commissioner Robert Thomas delivered a grant to Alvin Community College during a presentation on March 21.

The $243,556 grant will be used to purchase equipment to be used in patient simulation scenarios with an emphasis on interdisciplinary care. The grant was issued through the Workforce Commission’s Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) program.

“This grant is a critically important component for the governor’s mission to bring economic development to the State of Texas,” Thomas said.

Since 2014, ACC has received approximately $1.14 million from the Jobs and Education for Texans for the Nursing, Welding and Process Technology programs.

The JET program provides funding for equipment to eligible educational institutions for the purpose of developing career and technical education courses and may include courses offering dual-credit and technical education programs. Equipment funded through JET grants must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations.

“This JET grant directly combats a growing problem in our state, a lack of middle-skilled healthcare workers,” Thomas said. “With this grant, we are investing in more than fetal heart monitors and mobile point of care stations, we are investing in the economic health of students and their families as well as the physical health of all of  Southeast Texas. The program at Alvin Community College is paving the way to solving one of the biggest challenges facing all Texans.”

The Texas Workforce Commission is a state agency dedicated to helping Texas employers, workers and communities prosper economically. For details on TWC and the services it offers in coordination with its network of local workforce development boards, call 512-463-8942 or visit
