ACC Baseball Players/Coach Honored

The Alvin Community College Baseball team received several honors after closing out a stellar 2019 campaign.

The team entered the NJCAA Region 14 tournament as the number one seed after winning the South Zone during the regular season with a 31-24 record. The team was eliminated in the post-season tournament on Tuesday.

It’s always disappointing to end the season, but it was a really good year overall and we’ve got a few pieces to build around for the 2020 campaign,” ACC Athletic Director Bill Lewis said.

The team was 22-13 in conference play and Head Coach Jason Schreiber was named the Coach of the Year for the South Conference.  Outfielder Javeon Cody was named the South Conference Player of the Year.

Several members of the team also received honors for their performance. Cody joined pitcher Garrit Van Zijll on the All-Conference First Team.

“Cody’s mixture of speed and power is tough to find,” Lewis said. “Van Zijll joined us in the Fall of 2018 and he quickly started moving up the charts.  He averaged over 14 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched and finished the year among the national leaders.  He was an incredible addition to the team.  The coaches think both of those guys are looking at opportunities to play professionally.”

Shortstop Odrick Pitre, catcher Julian Rojas, third baseman Kade Morris and pitcher Tyler Zarella were named to the All-Conference Second Team.  Two players, Brian Dawson and Salvador Martinez, were named to the Region XIV All-Academic Team.

“Several of our players will be continuing their college careers at four-year schools and those final decisions will be made pretty soon as they continue to weigh their options and find their best fit as a player and student,” Lewis said. “Coach Schreiber and his staff put a lot of work into helping these players continue elsewhere.”
