ACC Helps Veterans Get Benefits

Alvin Community College hosted local veterans during the Veterans Education and Benefits Fair on June 24 to help show them the available resources to obtain their degree, find a job and purchase a home.

Government agencies and local organizations were at the Fair to provide vets with assistance including the Wounded Warriors Project, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Military Veteran Peer Network and many more.

Several ACC faculty and staff members also provided information about their programs to vets seeking a career including Paralegal, Court Reporting, Process Technology among others.

“Participants were able to receive plenty of information on veteran resources throughout the area,” said Toby Herzog, ACC veterans academic advisor.

ACC student Adam Jasso, of Pearland, said the Fair helpful in helping him learn about benefits are available.

“There’s a lot of good information,” he said. “Some of this stuff I didn’t even know about until I came here,” he said.

USDA Rural Development specialist Deborah Wright presented information on low interest home loans for houses located in rural areas. She said the participating organizations and agencies were given a chance to spread the word about their services in the Fair.

“We’re really trying to get the word out about what we do,” she said.

There were also information available at the Fair on job interview preparation, resume writing and other job placement skills.

Studies are showing that a majority of veterans in the United States are faring well in college by completing their education. More than 50 percent of veterans who have signed up to use their educational benefits have graduated with a degree or workforce certification, a completion rate which is comparable to other students, according to the Student Veterans of America organization.
