ACC Introduces Dolphins Lead

The Alvin Community College Office of Student Activities will begin the first year of Dolphins Lead: ACC Student Leadership Institute this fall.

Dolphins Lead is a year-long program where students learn valuable leadership skills that will help them as they advance in their career and education.

“The competition to transfer into a prestigious four-year university or to get a good job can be tough,” said Amanda Smithson, ACC Student Activities coordinator.

Each month, a new area of leadership will be discussed including networking and making contacts; goal setting; budgeting; professional communication and dress; taking and giving criticism and more.

“Students who successfully complete Dolphins Lead will learn some of the techniques and skills needed to rise above the competition and successfully achieve their goals,” Smithson said.

The program will be available to 30 students.

In addition, Dolphins Lead has partnered with the Alvin Manvel Area Chamber of Commerce to provide participants the opportunity to meet with local business and industry leaders to learn more about their success.

“It’s important for students to not only learn the keys to leadership, but also see those principles put into action,” Smithson said.

Upon successful completion of the program, all Dolphins Lead students will receive a letter of recommendation from a member of the ACC administration that can be used when applying to a four-your university or job. In addition, they will be recognized at ACC Award’s Day.

All current, ACC students who pay the Student Service Fee are welcome to participate in Dolphins Lead.

An informational session will be held Tuesday, September 9 at 12:30 p.m. in the Texas Room in the ACC Student Center. Dolphins Lead meetings will take place every other Tuesday at 12:20.

The Alvin Community College Drama Department will perform its spring musical, The Fantasticks, from March 7-14 at the Theatre. The musical is about a couple who fall in love, grow apart and then attempt to re-connect with each other. It is the world’s longest running musical. Performances are at 8 p.m. on March 7, 12-14.
