ACC Court Reporting Students Help Lawyer Training

ACC Court Reporting Students Help Lawyer Training

Four Alvin Community College Court Reporting students got to a chance to practice their deposition skills, while also helping future lawyers during a joint training session with the University of Houston Law School on March 20.

The trial advocacy training is an excellent opportunity for court reporting students to experience a real world deposition setting, ACC Court Reporting instructor Karen Downey said.

“This is invaluable experience for our students to practice what they’ve learned in the classroom,” Downey said.

Court reporting is transcribing the spoken word into a written record.  Though the profession is linked mostly to the legal system, many court reporters use their talents in other fields including writing captions for television, live events.

In the legal field, court reporters record trial testimony depositions and keep track of trial evidence.

During the training session, students reported pretrial witness examination in a mock civil lawsuit. In addition to the reporting, they also produce a full transcript of the proceedings.

“The transcripts will be used by the law students in preparation for a future mock trial in the case,” Downey said.
The UH Law School instructor John A. Buckley Jr. specifically turned to ACC court reporting students to participate in the training.

“We’ve helped them in the past, so they are familiar with our reputation for producing quality court reporters,” she said.
