Shift Your Career Into High Gear!
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, opportunities for commercial truck drivers are expected to grow between nine and 13 percent over the next few years, which makes this a great time to embark on a rewarding, secure career in the trucking industry. Trucking companies across the country are trying desperately to fill the increasing demand for trained truck drivers and new graduates are finding themselves more valued than ever in this competitive job market.
In the Alvin Community College Commercial Truck Driving Program students are prepared for entry-level employment in the trucking industry. This 286 hour program provides classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel driving experience. Students train on both loaded and empty trailers to experience a real-world driving environment and the vehicles used in the ACC training program are comparable to those used in the trucking industry. They include:
- Both conventional and cab over tractors
- Nine, ten and thirteen speed transmissions
- Set back axles; tandem, single and Jiff lock rear axle
- Trailers include 45, 48 and 53 foot dry vans and flat beds, as well as 27 and 30 foot pups and tankers.
Upon completion of the course, students will have the opportunity take the commercial driver’s license (CDL) written and driving examinations at the Texas Department of Public Safety office as a class activity. After successfully completing the program and obtaining the CDL, students will receive a certificate of completion from Alvin Community College.
Students will also receive assistance in setting career goals, developing resumes and improving interview skills. In addition, students are provided an opportunity to interview with recruiters from local and national freight companies.
Admission Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Have a valid Texas driver's license
- Be in good physical condition
- Have no serious physical handicaps
- Have a good driving record
- Complete application
- Pass required DOT drug screen test
Financial Assistance
Financial aid may be available to qualifying students provided by the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) or from the Texas Public Education Grant. To find out more about financial aid options call 281-756-3787.
Employment Outlook
Professional truck driving opportunities have never been greater. Entry level wages average more than $36,000 annually and many major companies will only hire entry-level drivers if they have had formalized training like that offered in the ACC CDL program.

New sessions of the ACC Commercial Truck Driving Class are held each semester.
Classes meet daily from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
