Medical Transcription

Alvin Community College Continuing Education offers an online Medical Transcription Editor course of study allowing students to adjust one’s own schedule to train and work from home. Transcriptionists type text into word processing software to edit content as necessary for grammar and clarity. Medical transcriptionists usually use a headset to listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other healthcare professionals then transcribe those recordings into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative material. The documents are returned to the healthcare professionals for review and signature or correction. These documents eventually become part of patient’s permanent files.

The course of study at ACC is Medical Transcription Editor which uses speech recognition software that allows the student to correct and edit audio dictation reports that are generated by Medical Transcription Editor. Medical Transcriptionists trained in speech recognition software are specialized medical transcriptionists and highly prepared for future employment.

The curriculum ACC utilizes is a certified program by the American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT). Students train online over a one year period. Many students finish sooner and are then prepared to test for national certification.

According to the U.S. Dept. of Labor, Medical Transcriptionists positions will grow by approximately 11% from 2008 to 2018, mostly working for remote medical transcription service organizations. Employment of transcriptionists is expected to be good, especially for those who are certified. The demand for well-trained medical transcription editors is rapidly increasing, and this program prepares students for both career paths, making them more flexible after graduation. The current trend towards digitalizing records will increase the need for Transcriptionist especially in large group practices. Medical Transcriptionists work from home and work for companies that are out-of-state because much work is online. This reassures the student that there is an endless supply of employers.

Average income according to U.S. Dept. of Labor showed mean wages of $31,710--$33,710 for the Gulf Coast of Texas and $32,660--$33,950 for Texas in May 2010. Nationally, the mean hourly wage is $16.12 in May 2010. Texas is one of the highest employment areas for this occupation. http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes319094.htm
