Join the Fun with ACCESS and Classes for Seniors
Exercise your mind and body in the regular programs, trips and classes offered to senior citizens age fifty and above through ACC Continuing Education Workforce Development.
ACCESS
Alvin Community College Education and Senior Services (ACCESS) offers monthly programs, outings, lunches and special classes for members.
Many of the ACCESS programs are free or are offered at a reduced cost.
Arts and Crafts
Painting with Colored Pencils
Learn to paint beautiful art pieces and more with techniques using colored pencils. You will be provided with prepared surfaces patterns in this class, but will be required to bring the rest of your own supplies.
Pen & Ink Oil Rouging
Without knowing how to draw you can create beautiful works of art using the old technique of pen & ink in a brand new way. In this class you will learn to:
This fun, easy, new technique is completely correctable so you can’t make a mistake. You can create your very own piece of art even if you can’t draw a straight line or have never painted before!
Beginning Quilting
Learn how to create your own beautiful quilts in this class, which will introduce you to the art of quilting. In this class you will learn:
The first class meeting will include an introduction to quilting along with a mini quilt show
At the end of the class you will leave with your first small hand-made quilt, a 46 1/2’ by 48 1/2’ quilt featuring a variation of a ‘Rails’ or ‘Rails Fence’ pattern.
After completing the Beginning Quilting class, you can go on to take Quilting II, which is a continuation of this first class.
Note: You will be required to bring your own sewing machine and supplies to class. A supply list will be handed out at the first class meeting.

Beginning Crochet and Tatting for Seniors
Crochet for Senior Adult Beginners
Create beautiful pieces in Crochet. You will learn the basic stitches, how to hold your needle and thread, and also how to read patterns. Pattern will be supplied. Bring a (size G or 6) crochet hook and yarn, any color will do.
Lost Art of Tatting for Senior Adult Beginners
Learn the basic stitches in tatting simply by making double knots and picots with a shuttle and thread. You will learn how to load your shuttle, and how to hold the thread and work the shuttle. You will also learn how to read patterns. Pattern will be supplied with the class. Supply list will be handed out in the first class.
Fitness Classes for Seniors 50 +
50+ Aerobics
Help maintain or improve cardiovascular function in this course designed for students 50 years and older. The class focuses on low-impact aerobics, stretching and toning exercises.
50+ Pilates
Pilates is a non-impact program for every body shape and level of fitness. In this senior class, the exercises focus on developing core stability while toning, strengthening and balancing the entire body, mind and spirit. With correct form, proper breathing and mental focus, you can improve flexibility and strengthen back muscles as well as tone and flatten abs.
Line Dancing
Learn a new line dance every class including four corners, flying eights, easy as 1-2-3, cha-cha and more in this class that will help you improve cardiorespiratory function, physical stamina and muscular endurance as you burn calories, improve circulation and eliminate toxins.
Strength Training with Weights
This course allows students to learn the correct use of weight machines to tone weak muscles and increase strength, range of motion and flexibility.
Stretch, Tone & Sculpt
This exercise class is designed to build strength, develop flexibility, and increase endurance. The exercises are carefully structured to use each part of the body in a specific sequence. Sustained use of the entire body will not only tone muscles, but will also burn calories, improve circulation, eliminate toxins, increase flexibility, improve balance and posture, and strengthen the core of the body.
50+ Zumba Fitness
Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will make you want to work out. The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat.
Life History Programs
Learn more about your family, your country, your community and yourself in one of the senior life history programs.
Genealogy I
This introductory class will teach you the basic of researching your family tree. Learn the most effective techniques and sources for compiling and preparing family trees.
Life Story Writing
In this course, you will learn to put decades of your eye-witness accounts of twentieth century history into written form. You will be able to create a well written legacy for your family and friends to enjoy.
Great Decisions
Great Decisions gives you the opportunity to come together with other civic-minded people to learn about, discuss and express opinions on foreign policy issues. The program is designed to encourage debate and discussion of the important global issues of our time.
Developed by the New York based Foreign Policy Association in 1954, the Great Decisions Discussion Program is the oldest and largest grassroots world affairs educational program of its kind. In addition to discussion, there are materials that will help you reach informed opinions on the issues and participate in the foreign policy process.
Computer Courses for Seniors
Introduction to Computers for Seniors
This course is designed to help senior citizens to take the mystery out of computers.
In this course you will learn computer terminology, computer hardware and software, and operating systems. You will also learn about files and folders, working with Windows and navigating the Internet. You will also learn about computer networks. Everything in this ‘hands-on’ course is explained in a way that can be easily understood.
Introduction to the Internet for Seniors
This course introduces the Internet, World Wide Web (WWW), and how to perform basic research to address personal or company/business needs of seniors. Topics include:
