The Adult Basic Education Department offers GED (General Educational Development) classes designed to help students pass all five sections of the GED Test. The test includes: reading, writing, social studies, science, and math. Both day and evening classes are offered at the Alvin and Pearland campuses during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
Students under the age of 18 must meet certain criteria. In order to enroll, seventeen year old students must have proof of withdrawal from public school and written permission from a parent or guardian. Sixteen year old students are accepted only when they are court ordered to attend a GED class.
A Pre-GED class is offered for those students who need instruction in basic reading, writing, and math skills.
The ACC GED class tuition is $15, and the PreGED class is free. Refer to the Continuing Education Schedule for the tuition costs for the Pearland Center classes. Scholarships are available to pay the GED tuition, book fees, and test fees for qualifying Pearland students
Upon completion of the class, students may take the GED test at Alvin Community College. For information about testing dates, times, and fees, contact the Academic Advising Office at 281.756.3531 or 281.756.3526.
A graduation ceremony is held annually to honor the students who pass the GED test during the previous year. Students are provided caps and gowns and receive a decorative certificate from the program coordinator. Families and friends of the graduates are encouraged to attend the celebration.
Students may register in person during the registration sessions held each semester at the Alvin and Pearland Campuses. Registration dates and times are available by calling 281.756.3554, or by referring to the Continuing Education schedule.
Four levels of ESL instruction are offered during the fall and spring semesters. Classes are provided for students who do not speak English and progress to an advanced class for students who wish to perfect their pronunciation and grammar skills. Students will be tested during registration to determine their class placement.
The classes are free and are offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm -9:00pm in the Alvin Community College Library.
Registration will be held each semester in the ACC Library. Dates and times are available by calling 281.756.3555, or by referring to the Continuing Education schedule.
