If you need transfer information for a specific course of study, please call the Academic Advising Office at 281.756.3531. You should also visit the Texas Common Course Numbering System website to learn more about transferring college credit in the state of Texas.
The Texas Common Course Numbering System is a voluntary, co-operative effort among Texas community colleges and universities to facilitate transfer of freshman- and sophomore-level general academic coursework.
The TCCNS provides a shared, uniform set of course designations for students and their advisors to use in determining both course equivalency and degree applicability of transfer credit on a statewide basis. When students transfer between two participating TCCNS institutions, a course taken at the sending institution transfers as the course carrying, or cross-referenced with, the same TCCNS designation at the receiving institution.
It can help assure a smooth transfer from Alvin Community College to your chosen four-year school. A General Education Core Curriculum has been defined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. If you follow the prescribed curriculum, you can be assured that the credits satisfy general education requirements at a majority of Texas colleges and universities.
The General Education Core Curriculum consists of courses considered essential for a student's success in college and life. The curriculum is equivalent to the first two years of a four-year baccalaureate program. The Core Curriculum includes courses in math, oral and written communication, social and behavioral science, physical and life science, humanities and fine arts.
The TCCNS website contains the most up-to-date list of approved courses.
The transferable General Education Core Curriculum becomes effective for students entering an associate or baccalaureate degree-granting public institution as a first-time freshman in the summer of 1999 and thereafter.
There are three ways a student pursuing a bachelor's degree can satisfy lower-division general education requirements:
- Attend Alvin Community College and complete the transferable General Education Core Curriculum as part of the AA or AS degree, or
- Attend Alvin Community College and complete the total transferable General Education Core Curriculum prior to admission to a bachelor's degree program, or
- Attend a four-year university and complete that institution's general education requirements
Many institutions adopting changes in degree/curriculum requirements, including ACC, allow students to choose whether to follow the old or the new requirements for credit earned before summer 1999.
Because each community college or university decides how to apply credit earned prior to summer 1999, students should contact the Academic Advising Office at ACC to discuss their particular circumstance.
Only courses on the list are guaranteed to transfer among participating institutions. Other courses may transfer on a college-by-college basis. Work with Academic Advising Office at Alvin Community College to check on each course to determine transferability.
