Effective Email

Before the First Message

  • View the About Mail Tutorial in the WebCT Student Lounge
  • Review Netiquette
  • Consider the content of the email and organize your thoughts
  • Know where to locate documents that you will attach

Creating the Message

  • Browse for recipients of the email (Make sure that ONLY recipients you want to receive the message are checked)
  • Include a subject in the subject line
  • Avoid jokes, pictures, or other files unrelated to the course. Emails inside your online course should be related to the course
  • Create a clear and succinct message
  • Avoid sarcasm, slang, or other regional jargon. Be professional!
  • Be sure to include your name at the conclusion of the message
  • Attach any necessary documents (Verify that the document that you want to send is attached)
  • Preview the message carefully before you send

Receiving Messages

  • Reply to the message if necessary
  • Organize important messages in folders (You may need important information for projects or tests)
  • Be patient when waiting on a response
  • After 48 hours send a courtesy email to make sure that your email was received
  • Do not read too much into a message. Miscommunications are common when using email.
