Common Misconceptions of Online Classes

Misconception

Truth

Myth #1

Online Courses are easier than Face-to-Face classes

Online courses are equivalent to face-to-face courses. If it is your first online course it may even seem more difficult if you are not familiar with the technology and format of the online class.

Myth #2

Online course are the same as independent study classes, so I can finish the work following my own timetable and schedule

Most online classes have designated due dates for assignments and tests. Online classes generally offer flexible times for completing assignments and assessments, but you must follow the schedule set by the instructor.

Myth #3

Online instructors are always online.

Many online instructors also teach traditional classes and have many other responsibilities in addition to the online course. Emails or other responses can take 24- 48 hours in some cases. Be sure to check your course syllabus for the instructor's policies for responding to emails.

Myth #4

You will be on your own in an online course.

You will have the support of an instructor as well as other classmates in the online class. Online collaboration tools allow students to work together online and create bonds with others in the class.
