Important Information for ACC Loan Borrowers:

  • Loan funds are disbursed in two disbursements per semester (four checks for the year).
  • First-time ACC loan borrowers - Federal law requires that ACC hold your first loan disbursement until 30 days after your classes begin. If ACC has received electronic confirmation of your entrance counseling and Master Promissory Note (MPN) from the U.S. Dept. of Education at least seven days prior to the payment deadline for the semester, you may attend classes until your loan funds are applied to your account. You will be required to pay for books and supplies from your own source of funds until your loan refund is issued.
  • Returning ACC loan borrowers - ACC must receive electronic confirmation of your entrance counseling and Master Promissory Note (MPN) from the U.S. Dept. of Education at least seven days prior to the payment deadline for the semester. You are responsible for paying your tuition and fees from your own source of funds until ACC receives the electronic confirmation.
  • Loan funds are applied to your ACC account. Refund dates are posted under the Latest News.

Satisfactory Academic Progress is checked for all borrowers before each loan disbursement. Your loan disbursement may be delayed or canceled based on grade review and /or your Satisfactory Academic Progress Status.

ACC must receive electronic confirmation from the U.S. Dept. of Education that you completed your entrance counseling and Master Promissory Note (MPN) at least seven days prior to your first disbursement date. If electronic confirmation is not received in time, your first disbursement will be scheduled for the next available disbursement date.

William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Direct Loans)

Direct Subsidized Student Loan

Available to students with low interest, long-term loans made through the U.S. Department of Education for students who demonstrate financial need. You are not charged interest before repayment begins or during authorized deferment periods. The government "subsidizes" the interest while you are enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours).

Direct Unsubsidized Student Loan

Available to students who need additional assistance, and you do not have to demonstrate financial need to get one. These loans charge interest immediately until they are paid off, however payment is not due as long as you maintain half-time enrollment (6 credit hours). For an unsubsidized loan disbursed after July 1, 2013, the interest rate is 3.86% (the processing fees are the same as the subsidized loan-see above).

Direct Parent Loans (PLUS)

Available to parents, not to exceed the cost of attendance, minus any other financial aid awarded to the students. You must be the student's biological or adoptive parent or the student's stepparent, if the biological or adoptive parent has remarried at the time of application. Your child must be a dependent student who is enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours). Parent PLUS loan borrowers cannot have an adverse credit history (the parent's credit will be checked). In addition, parents and their dependent child must be U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens, must not be in default on any federal education loans or owe an overpayment on a federal education grant, and must meet other general eligibility requirements for the Federal Student Aid programs. The Parent PLUS Loan interest rate is 6.41%, with a processing fee of 4.204% (disbursements before December 1, 2013) or 4.288% (disbursements after December 1, 2013). Interest is charged during all periods, beginning on the date of the first loan disbursement.

Loan Application Process

Apply for Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan (Students Only)

  • To apply for a loan, students must complete the FAFSA and submit all needed documents to ACC. Loans may be used for educational expenses, which can include: tuition, fees, books, housing, and living expenses. Loan funds are delivered to Alvin Community College for disbursement to students, and balances owed to ACC are deducted from your loan funds before refunds are issued.
  • Once a subsidized and/or unsubsidized loan has been award by ACC, you may view your award via WebACCess.
  • Loan recipients will receive an email from the ACC Financial Aid Office containing instructions on how to complete the loan application, entrance counseling, and a Master Promissory Note (MPN). YOU MUST WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM THE ACC FINANCIAL AID OFFICE BEFORE YOU CAN COMPLETE THE LOAN PROCESS.
  • Please make sure that ACC has your updated email address on WebACCess.
  • If you do not receive an email within 5 business days of viewing your loan on WebACCess, please email the Financial Aid Office at fa@alvincollege.edu. Please include your full name and ACC ID Number.
  • You may reduce the amount of your loan or decline it by emailing your full name, ACC ID Number, and reduced amount to the Financial Aid Office at fa@alvincollege.edu
  • If you choose not to accept the loan or do not complete the application process, your loan will AUTOMATICALLY BE CANCELLED within 30 days of the initial award.

Apply for Direct Parent (PLUS) Loan (Parents Only)

Parents may login to www.studentloans.gov to apply for a PLUS Loan. Since Parent (PLUS) Loans are credit based, Alvin Community College will not process a PLUS Loan until an approved credit application is on file. The credit approval or denial is forwarded to ACC electronically. The student and parent are notified when ACC receives a credit approval, and credit approvals are awarded PLUS Loans up to the student's available ACC cost of attendance (actual award may be less than the amount approved by the credit check). The PLUS Loan amount can be viewed on WebACCess after it has been awarded. Loan funds are delivered to Alvin Community College, and applied to balances owed to ACC. The remaining amount will be refunded to the student OR parent (the parent indicates the refund recipient on the PLUS Loan application).

Complete Loan Exit Counseling

Students are required to completed Exit Counseling when dropping or enrolling below half-time (6 hours), withdrawing from all classes, transferring, or graduating. Exit Counseling provides important information about the terms of your loan(s), repayment options, and loan forgiveness opportunities. Please visit the Financial Aid Forms page to download Exit Counseling instructions.

Know Who You Owe??????

Due to changes in the student loan industry, many educational loans have been sold or transferred. It is important to know which entity holds your student loan, and who to contact when you need assistance.

You must notify your loan holder when:

  • You change your address, phone number, or other contact information
  • You are having trouble making payments (deferments and forbearances are available for those that are unemployed, currently enrolled, or experiencing financial hardship)
  • You transfer or graduate from school
  • Please be aware, because of the changes in the student loan market, students may now have multiple loan holders. It is necessary to contact each loan holder if any of the above conditions apply to you.
  • To find out your current loan holder, view the status of your loans, and view your financial aid history (federal aid only)-- log on to www.nslds.ed.gov (you will need your federal/FAFSA PIN).
