Degree: Associate in Applied Science
Length: Four-Semester (two-year) Program
Purpose: The Associate in Applied Science Degree curriculum in Mental Health provides theory, skills, and knowledge used in the field of mental health—mental retardation and alcohol and drug abuse. The program prepares the graduate to obtain employment in a variety of human service and mental health settings under the supervision of a professional or rehabilitation training, direct care to clients, probation, corrections, treatment for alcohol and drug dependency and psychiatric care.
Students who complete the required DSHS approved courses and the required work of volunteer time will be eligible to take the licensure examinations for the Texas Department of State Health Services.

This course is an in depth study of the theories and principles of behavioral science and skill development in the methods of modifying and controlling behavior. We will examine clinical and personal settings in counseling. The course will emphasize techniques for managing self-behavior. Topics include stimulus controls, shaping, relaxation training, reinforcement scheduling and taken economics. (3 lecture hours per week).
