Program Description
The Computer Science Technology Degree prepares students for a career in computer
programming. Computer programmers create instructions that tell the computer
what to do, such as which information to identify and access, how to process
it, and what equipment to use. Individuals who are detail-oriented and have
strong math and analytical skills are often good candidates for this field.
Career Opportunities
Computer programmers are employed in almost every industry, but the largest
concentration is in the computer and data processing industry. Programmers also
work for firms that provide engineering and management services, telecommunications
companies, manufacturers of computer and office equipment, financial institutions,
insurance carriers, health care organizations, education institutions, and government
agencies.
The computer services industry has the fastest wage and salary employment growth in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The average salary of a computer programmer working in Houston, Texas is $57,256. Average salaries range from $40,108 - $66,240. Starting salaries for computer programmers are typically $30,000 or more.
