Nursing Transition (LVN to ADN)

Program Description
The transition program is designed to provide a pathway from Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to Registered Nurse (RN). The program is one-year in length, with credit given for experience as an LVN.

A new nursing class begins each May and applications are accepted from January thru March. Applicants meeting minimum admission requirements become part of an applicant pool and the nursing program admits the top applicants from this pool.

During the application period, applications are available from the college web site or from the nursing department. For more detailed information about the program and to view the frequently asked questions, please see the “Academic – Nursing” section of the college web site. The same information can also be obtained by contacting the nursing department.

The Associate Degree Nursing Transition program is accredited by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The program is also accredited by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas and by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). ACC’s program is rated Exemplary by the Southern Association of Community Colleges and graduates of the program enjoy a 95% to 100% pass rate on the State Licensing Exam.

Career Opportunities
Job opportunities for RNs are expected to be very good. Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2010. Thousands of job openings also will result from the need to replace experienced nurses who leave the occupation, especially as the age of the registered nurse population continues to rise. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, median annual earnings of registered nurses were $44,840 in 2000. The middle 50 percent earned between $37,870 and $54,000. ACC graduates typically start their careers making $42,000.
