Start a Career in Health Care in as Little as One Semester!
Working under the direct supervision of a certified medical technician, phlebotomy
technicians (PBT) are integral members of any medical laboratory department. Phlebotomy
technicians collect blood samples, from both skin punctures and from veins, and transport
specimens to the laboratory to ensure the stability of the sample.
While interacting with patients and their families, PBTs must always demonstrate high standards of professionalism as well as help to maintain safe working conditions including following standard safety precautions and procedures. They may also perform some clinical, technical, or clerical functions.
In the ACC Continuing Education Workforce Development one-semester Phlebotomy Technician Program, you will learn the skills to assist health care teams in the accurate, safe, and reliable collection and transportation of blood and other specimens for clinical testing.
To be eligible for admission to the ACC Phlebotomy Technician program, you must:
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Be at least 18 years old
- Complete a CEWD Healthcare Programs Application
- Pass a criminal background check
- Show proof of specific immunizations and submit a completed health form documenting your physical examination
- CPR certified within the last 2 years
- Additional specific hospital requirements may vary

The ACC PBT Program consists of both online classes and hands-on lab practice. New sessions of this one semester program are held year-round. In this course, students will develop the skills you need to master a variety of blood-collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Class topics include:
- Vacuum collection devices
- Capillary skin puncture
- Butterfly needles and blood culture
- Specimen collection on adults, children, and infants
- Proper patient identification
- Labeling of specimens for quality assurance
- Professionalism and ethics
- Medical Terminology
This is a hybrid course and most of the assignments and tests can be done on your home computer or on the college computers. This is a one-semester program which includes four on-campus face to face labs for instruction and to practice vein-punctures on mannequin arms. Note: This class must be taken concurrently with Clinical Phlebotomy.
This class serves as the lab portion of the PBT program. It is a health-related, work-based learning experience that enables you to apply the information learned in the lecture portion of the program to actual, hands-on sample collection. Clinical hours must be completed at a clinic or hospital. Direct supervision is provided by a clinical professional. Note: This class must be taken concurrently with the Phlebotomy lecture class.
