Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) - A.A.S. Degree/Certificate
Help Save Lives as an Emergency Medical Technician
If you enjoy helping others, have lots of patience and like an adrenaline rush when being called into action, you may be the perfect fit to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). A career as an EMT is lived on the cutting edge as you care for individuals with health emergencies. At any given time, you may be the first to arrive at the scene by ambulance or helicopter to assist individuals injured in accidents, experiencing life threatening trauma such heart attacks and strokes, or have been victims of violence.
There are three levels of EMS training: Basic, Intermediate and Paramedic. Paramedics receive the most advanced training and provide the most extensive pre-hospital care. Typical Paramedic duties include: caring for patients at the scene and on EMT transport; managing respiratory, cardiac and trauma emergencies; administering drugs and intravenous fluids; interpreting electrocardiograms; and many other life-saving tasks.

Career Opportunities
EMTs and paramedics are employed in a number of industries including private ambulance firms, local governments, service providers, hospitals, industrial/occupational safety, fire department EMS agencies, disaster/special rescue teams, special event/entertainment medic, and police/tactical paramedic. The demand for EMTs and paramedics will continue to increase as the population grows – particularly older age groups that are the greatest users of emergency medical services. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), EMTs and paramedics in Texas earn an annual average salary of $39,900.

2021 Paramedic Statistics
CAAHEP Accredited Paramedic Programs and CoAEMSP Letter of Review (LoR) programs track and report outcome measures annually to the Committee on Accreditation for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
The most current CoAEMSP Annual Report was for the calendar year 2021.
The most recent success rate for the National Registry for EMT Paramedic/State Cognitive exam was 88.9%.
The most recent positive placement rate for graduates was 77.8%. Positive placement is defined by the CoAEMSP as "Employed full or part-time in a related field and/or continuing his/her education and/or serving in the military." Positive placement is measured at completion of the program.
The most recent retention rate was 81.8%.
Program Goals
To prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, Emergency Medical Technician, and Emergency Medical Responder levels.
What Will I Study?
You will receive personal attention and hands-on instruction through class lectures, skills training and clinical training in hospital and ambulance settings. Alvin Community College's EMT program adheres to the curricula set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Texas Department of Health Services, American Heart Association, and the International Trauma Life Support Association.
The EMT program offers three pathways: an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree, an Advanced Technical Certificate, and an EMT Paramedic Certificate.

Approximate yearly costs for the EMT A.A.S. Degree program including tuition and fees are $5,839 for in-district students, $8,659 for students out-of-district, and $11,839 for non-residents.
Approximate yearly costs for the EMT Paramedic Certificate program including tuition and fees are $4,739 for in-district students, $6,619 for students out-of-district, and $8,739 for non-residents.
Yearly costs for the EMT Advanced Certificate program including tuition and fees are approximately $2,239 for in-district students, $3,085 for students out-of-district, and $4,039 for non-residents.
