Alvin College Communications Students Test Skills at the Rodeo

Taking an opportunity to test their skills behind the camera and in the control room, Alvin College Communications students recently got a chance to work at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The Department was represented by 20 students who worked at the rodeo filming, editing and directing the broadcast productions.

Communications Chair Jason Nichols said working at the rodeo is a valuable opportunity for his students.

“Our students are immersed in a professional environment surrounded by some of the best people in the industry,” Nichols said. “They get immediate hands-on experience with the most current state of the art equipment in the world. The students also deal with levels of intensity that cannot be replicated in the classroom and become equipped to walk into most professional television environments and have the experience to handle any situation.”

Alvin College students have worked in past rodeo events, he said.

“Several of the interns have made such positive impressions with the staff at HLSR that they have been invited back to fill entry level positions on the video crew,” he said.
