Jody Droege - Vice Chair Jody Droege, Vice Chair
Class of 2011
Regent since 2014
Associate Degree in Business Administration - ACC

How did ACC help you in your career and life?
Originally, when I started in 1992, it was to obtain an Associate in Business Administration degree. However, I had two small children, and trying to balance them, a job, starting our own business, and attending school was just too much. I was determined to return one day and complete the degree I had started. By the time I returned in 2009 to complete what I had started, I shifted towards a Business Management degree to aid in making educated decisions about our business. It gave me the courage to do things I was not comfortable doing, like speaking in public, walking into a room by myself, or interacting with other students.

Looking back on your time at ACC, what do you remember most?
I remember how patient and understanding the faculty were. I didn’t have much extra time to participate in all the college campus life things, but I remember being proud of the accomplishments of not only my fellow students but the college itself.

How do your experiences as a student impact your decisions as a regent?
As a regent, I appreciate the time and effort it takes for a student to recommit themselves to school after being out for a specific length of time. I try to make decisions based on how they will affect our students’ outcomes. How can we make going back to school easier for a single parent or a student who supports themselves through college, or the first-generation student trying to maneuver things on their own? A former experienced regent once told me to ask myself this question every time before a vote is made: “How will this affect/benefit our students?” I apply this question during budget workshops and when new courses or programs are being discussed. We care about our students and their success. Each graduate is a success story, and I am proud to be a very small part of that.

How did ACC help you in your career and life?
I met my husband of 49 years while attending Alvin Junior College in 1969. I came back to college to visit and thank those who helped me while I attended AJC. While visiting, I was asked if I would be interested in starting a fashion merchandising program for the college. After giving the offer a lot of thought, I agreed to create the program and teach. The college has played a major role in my life. After 39 years at ACC, I retired in August 2015. I have been a regent since 2016.

Looking back on your time at ACC, what do you remember most?
As a student, I remember walking into the “sub,” as the cafeteria was called at the time, and hearing the jukebox blaring and the sub packed with students. I remember the college starting its first basketball team in 1970, and I was one of the first cheerleaders.

How do your experiences as a student impact your decisions as a regent?
I was very fortunate to receive a lot of guidance and support from instructors and counselors. I know how important those who serve in our student services are to our students, as well as our instructors.

Regent Since 20184
Associate Degree in General Studies – ACC

How did ACC help you in your career and life?
The smaller class sizes facilitated interaction with the instructors. Learning how to talk with my instructors helped me greatly when I got to A&M and opened up many opportunities as I completed my degrees there.

Looking back on your time at ACC, what do you remember most?
Band. We had a blast and we were good. The band performed at many competitions and jazz festivals across the state. Those were great experiences. I also was involved in student government, which was a great way to learn about organizations. ACC was my fun college experience. I enjoyed my classes and all the extracurricular activities I got to participate in.

How do your experiences as a student impact your decisions as a regent?
I try to make decisions that will improve the student experience and help students to be successful. I learned so much and enjoyed my time as a student so much, I want other students to have that experience.

The flexible class schedules and supportive faculty made it easier to balance my studies with part-time work on and off campus. How do your experiences as a student impact your decisions as a regent?
My experiences as a student at ACC will greatly impact my decisions as a regent. Understanding firsthand the challenges of balancing academics, work, and personal life, I am committed to advocating for policies that enhance student support services, such as academic advising, career counseling, and financial aid. I am particularly excited about ACC offering a four-year degree, allowing students to stay closer to home and possibly help with family businesses while still fulfilling their academic dreams. My goal is to create an environment where every student has the resources and opportunities to succeed, just as I did, ensuring that ACC continues to be a place of opportunity and growth for all students.
