ACC Senior Parents Night

To help parents of high school seniors prepare for their student’s transition to college, Alvin Community College will host Senior Parent’s Night on Tuesday, Feb. 20 on the ACC campus.

“The last semester of your child’s senior year is so full of milestones and preparations for their future plans,” said John Matula, ACC Vice President of Student Services. “We want to be there to help parents understand the college admissions process and help them navigate the steps that they and their students need to take in the coming weeks and months.”

ACC Admissions Counselors and Financial Aid Advisors will be available from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to assist families in completing the Apply Texas application and the 2024 FAFSA in the ACC Welcome Center.

“There is a new FAFSA for 2024 and we hope it will be a much simpler process for families to complete,” said Gabriela Leon, ACC director of Financial Aid. “Families no longer need to have tax documents on-hand to complete the application. They just need to create an FSA ID for the parent and student.”

“Some of our most popular programs are in the STEM and Healthcare pathways,” said Amanda Smithson, director of Recruitment and Enrollment. “We want students and their parents to see the many different career and educational opportunities available in those pathways, so ACC pathway advisors will be available from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. to share information and answer questions.”

Transitioning to college from high school, understanding the TSI and the new FAFSA, and learning about the requirements for admissions to community colleges are just a few of the topics that will be covered from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in an information session for parents.

“As a parent of a current college student, I remember how overwhelming it can be to understand everything you need to know to help your child get started in college,” Matula said. “At Senior Parent’s Night, we hope to help parents have a better understanding of the process.”

Seniors who complete an ACC application at Senior Parent’s Night will receive a voucher to take the TSI for free. They will also be entered into a drawing to win one of two $250 ACC scholarships.

Light refreshments will also be served. To learn more about Senior Parent’s Night, email recruit@alvincollege.edu.
