When Nevaeh Mansur recently stepped up to the microphone to sing “How Could I Ever Know” at a public concert at Alvin Community College, it was a couple of “firsts”. It was the first time she sang for the ACC Community Chorus and it was the first time she, and other members of the choir, had performed in front of an audience in 17 months.
“Usually I’m not that nervous because I’m used to performing in front of people,” she said. “It was really scary getting back into it but it was also really fun.”
The concert for the Choir and ACC Community Band was held on May 6. Nearly 100 people showed up and sat in the grass to listen to the singers and musicians.
“Lots of people came, brought picnics and sat on the lawn,” said Dr. Kevin Moody, ACC Music Department chair. “We’re made to be creative. We’re artists and singers so we need to do that in a community. Being able to do that again, felt great.”
The Community Band and the Community Chorus will start practices again in August as well as live performances in front of an audience throughout the 2021-22 school year.
“We start rehearsals in the fall with both the student groups and community groups,” Moody said. “And we will start with our normal schedules.”
The ACC Community Band and Chorus include musicians and singers who are students in college Music programs as well as performers from the community. The Community Band has been performing since 1994 and the Community Chorus has been performing since 2014.
During the shutdown, the Band and Choir were not able to perform or even rehearse in person. Singers and musicians were forced to perform through remote online video and audio.
“That was just miserable,” Moody said.
“It was definitely a challenge,” Mansur added. “It was sad and upsetting that we could not make music together.”
The Chorus typically has approximately 40 members and the band has approximately 60 members. Joining the band and choir is free and open to the public.
Rehearsals for the Chorus will begin Tuesday, August 24 and the Band will begin rehearsals on Thursday, August 26.
