Basic Wastewater Operations

This course provides an overview of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requirements for wastewater operators and the operation of wastewater treatment plants in the State of Texas. Students will be taught the method of activated sludge treatment and the variations of activated sludge treatment. The course will teach the importance of record retention, state the rules and regulations of safety. Upon completion the student should be able to identify the characteristics of wastewater, explain the collection system, differentiate the wastewater treatment process, identify operations of treatment plants, and explain the TCEQ rules and regulations. The course will prepare students for the “D” level wastewater exam given by the TCEQ.

Wastewaster Collection

Design and purpose of wastewater systems.  Includes methods of cleaning/inspecting sewer lines, repair/construction techniques, on-th-job safety, toxic and explosive gas detection, size/slope sewer line detection, flow velocities, and life station operation and maintenance.  Upon completion, the student should be able to differentiate among operation and maintenance requirements for different types of wastewater collection systems, use maintenance equipment, identify cleaning and maintenance methods, identify general characteristics of wastewater, and describe techniques for the protection of public health.

Water Distribution

Sources characteristics of water. Includes water distribution systems, water mains, valves and hydrants, storage, meters and services, pump installation and operations, maintenance of customer meters, and corrosion control. Upon completion the student should be able to evaluate public health issues related to water distribution, as well as describe and identify; distribution systems, hydraulic and water mains and services.
