VA Educational Benefits
New Students – 1st Semester Using VA Benefits at ACC
Step One – to apply for or transfer benefits:

- Visit the VA website and follow the directions carefully.
Step Two – Submit the necessary documentation to Veteranservices@alvincollege.edu as PDF attachments.

- VA Certificate of Eligibility, dated within one year of the semester for which you are applying.
- Member 4 Copy of DD214
- Official copy of your military transcript submitted Alvin Community College (NOT required for dependents who are using transferred benefits)
- Have a Degree Plan on file
- Official Copy of all Civilian transcripts sent to the ACC Registrar
- Complete a Veterans Certification Request form
Renewal Certification (Continuing Students) – Required EACH semester

- Submit Certification Request Form (two weeks prior to open registration)
- Register for Classes
Hazlewood Exemption
Applying for the exemption the first time
Veterans using the Exemption:

- Registration with the Hazlewood Student Hours Online database – Once registered, log in and print the Account Overview page (even if hours show zero) for the school.
- Certificate of Separation or Discharge (DD Form 214) – The copy you provide must be legible and contain place of entry, home of record at the time of entry, character of service, length of service, and dates of service.
- Certificate of Eligibility for Federal GI Bill® benefits (COE) – Required for veterans who served after September 11, 2001. COE is the VA's determination of Education benefit entitlement.
- Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application – Email all documents to Veteranservices@alvincollege.edu as PDF attachments.
Legacy Act – Veterans Transferring Unused Hours to an Eligible Child:

- Registration with the Hazlewood Student Hours Online database – Both the student and veteran are required to register for their own accounts. Once registered, log in and print the Account Overview page (even if hours show zero) for the school.
- Certificate of Separation or Discharge (DD Form 214) – The copy you provide must be legible and contain place of entry, home of record at the time of entry, character of service, length of service, and dates of service.
- Certificate of Eligibility for Federal GI Bill® benefits (COE) – Required for veterans who served after September 11, 2001. Certificates of eligibility should be in the name of the student who is applying to use the exemption and may be obtained by completing an application. COE is the VA's determination of Education benefit entitlement.
- Relationship Documentation – a copy of the student’s birth certificate, adoption papers, or a copy of the veteran’s most recent tax return transcript showing the student claimed as a dependent.
- Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application – Email all documents to Veteranservices@alvincollege.edu as PDF attachments.
Spouse/Child of 100% Disabled or Deceased Veteran:

- Registration with the Hazlewood Student Hours Online database – Once registered, log in and print the Account Overview page (even if hours show zero) for the school.
- Certificate of Separation or Discharge (DD Form 214) – The copy you provide must be legible and contain place of entry, home of record at the time of entry, character of service, length of service, and dates of service.
- Certificate of Eligibility for Federal GI Bill® benefits (COE) – Required for veterans who served after September 11, 2001. - Documentation from DOD or VA of a veteran’s service-related death or 100 percent disability
- Relationship Documentation – a copy of the student’s birth certificate, adoption papers, or a copy of the veteran’s most recent tax return showing the student claimed as a dependent.
- Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application – Email all documents to Veteranservices@alvincollege.edu as PDF attachments.
Returning ACC Students who wish to renew the Hazlewood Exemption:

- Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application for Continued Enrollment - Applications must be submitted every semester
- If you are not enrolled for one long term (Fall, Spring), you must submit the Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application
- You may have to submit supporting documentation if there has been a change in benefits or previously submitted documents are older than one year.
- Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application for Continued Enrollment - Applications must be submitted every semester
